Name the Boy is a thematically connected collection of short stories that peels away the protective coating surrounding the inner lives of fathers and sons. Characters that are simultaneously archetypal, yet real, scratching out lives as lobstermen, soldiers and desperate lovers, people Name the Boy. The title of the book evokes the urgency of each character as they search for their identity, as they search for their name, in a modern world where the roles of men and boys are sometimes subjugated to the will of progress.
The collection is Shawn Kerivan's creative thesis from his recently completed MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College. More than just the author's imagination went into the writing of this collection. It's a synthesis of life, critical reflection, and creative exploration, resulting in a singular work that simultaneously defies classification while invoking much of the great writing that the author studied while writing these stories.
